WinBook X4

WinBook X4

The WinBook X4 succeeded the X1/X2 as WinBook's Pentium 4-powered thin and light. Yes, a Pentium 4 thin and light, not the best sounding idea on the surface. Now, I've actually got one of these, so I can write a lot more about the X4 here than I can on other models.

First off, it can actually keep itself cool. It's got a bit of a loud fan, and said fan always runs at all times, but it isn't too too annoying. I think the design looks nice, and the build quality is fairly decent. My biggest complaint really is that the keyboard isn't mounted great, so it sounds a bit "rattly" at you type if you get what I'm saying. But the key feel itself is nice.

Like other WinBook models of the early 2000s, the X4 is based on an off-the-shelf laptop design from ECS (Elitegroup Computer Systems), who are what is known as an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM). All of WinBook's laptops went through on ODM to some extent, and the X4 is no exception. It is based off of the ECS Green550 laptop, which is actually visible on a sticker on the bottom. These ECS laptops were seemingly overall decent. Most if not all of them had metal rear display housings, so stress cracking around the hinges shouldn't ever be an issue on these, X4 included.
