Alpha-Top Green740

Alpha-Top Green740 - Common Faults & Maintenance

I don't have much info right now regarding issues - I've already had to dig hard enough to find what I have! Here's a few things to watch out for:

Battery Leaks

The main battery of the Green740 is a NiMH pack, so keep a close eye on it and make sure you don't let it leak in the laptop. The bigger concern though is the CMOS battery.

Other early Alpha-Top laptops (like the Green751 and the Green753) used a 3-cell NiMH coin cell battery made by VARTA as a CMOS battery, placed directly next to the CPU socket of all places. These batteries are infamous for leaking, and given their placement (and that they're soldered in), they'll cause damage FAST, even in the case of a very minor leak. I can't confirm that the Green740 has the same battery, but given that other Alpha-Top laptops from this time did, the chances are high in my opinion. Check yours!

If you own a Green740 and can confirm what type of CMOS battery it uses, send me an email: macdatnet@gmail.com

Hinge Failures/Brittle plastic

Like other 90s laptop, Alpha-Top plastic is quite brittle and other Alpha-Top laptops from this time are prone to hinge failures. This one likely is too, although I haven't seen it yet.
