Alpha-Top Green735

Alpha-Top Green735

The Alpha-Top Green735 is a Pentium or AMD K6-2-based 3-spindle generic/ODM laptop, released in 1998. It was sold by many local-market distributors, including Jetta, Hyperdata, Trogon, ARM Computer, Maxtech, and others.

CPU Support

The Green735's CPU is on a daughtercard. Two daughtercard types exist. "Type 1" has soldered Intel Pentium MMX Tillamook chips, either 233 or 266MHz. The "Type 2" daughtercard has a standard socket 7 socket on it. You can install certain Intel Pentium chips (166-266MHz) on the Type 2 card, as well as AMD K6-2 chips (233-400MHz).

There is conflicting info here, so I can't be sure, but earlier revision G735s may not support AMD chips.

RAM Support

The G735 has two 144-pin RAM slots. Early revision units only work with EDO RAM, but later revision ones work fine with SDRAM. EDO maximum is 256MB (if you can find the modules). SDRAM effective max is also 256MB, requiring low-profile modules, but it may be possible to modify 256MB cards to work for more RAM. They just won't fit by default.

Common Faults & Maintenance

Brittle plastic and hinge failure

The plastic on the Green735 is very brittle, which will lead to it forming cracks around the display hinges due to stress it can no longer handle. When yours begins to crack, you can add epoxy to reinforce the area. Unlike earlier Alpha-Top laptops, the Green735's hinges cannot be easily loosened.
