The Macintosh Portable was Apple's first truly portable mac. It took the form of a luggable, with a high-quality Active-Matrix LCD, a full-size keyboard, and a large lead-acid battery. All of these features did cause it to be very heavy, and very expensive.

It is well known that the Portable's power management system has many flaws, causing it to be highly unreliable nowadays. From failing ICs to faulty capacitors, getting a portable running is a challenge.

Fun Fact!

The portable is unique for being just about the only vintage mac that doesn't turn yellow! The plastic composition used in the portable is such that it doesn't suffer from it. Well, except for the space bar for some reason, so that will turn yellow. I have however not been able to come to an understanding on why this is. Some say that the Portable's case doesn't have BFRs in it (fire retardant), which is what they say causes ABS plastic to yellow. Others however have refuted this. As for the space bar, it's pretty well understood that it is made out of ABS plastic, the sort that does yellow, and the rest of the keys aren't ABS.
