PowerBook G3 "Kanga" - Home

The PowerBook G3 "Kanga" was the first generation of the G3 PowerBooks. It shared the same external design, and much of the same internal design as the older PowerBook 3400c. There were some internal differences though, besides the updated motherboard. The Kanga included a metal shim on each base hinge mount to reinforce them. Some plastic parts, such as the bottom case, are not swappable between the two. I'm currently not sure of the full degree of compatibility between 3400c and Kanga parts, but many are compatible. It shares the same modular bay that the 3400c used, so both 3400c and 5300 Series modules are compatible.

The Kanga name comes from the internal codename for this laptop. Apple simply called it the "PowerBook G3". Notably, the Kanga had another codename: PowerBook 3500. Many Kanga battery packs are actually labeled "Macintosh PowerBook Lithium Ion Rechargeable Battery for Series 3500". This and other signs indicate that Apple was likely going to release the Kanga as the PowerBook 3500 up until very close to launch.

Later Kanga batteries do have G3 written on them.

How do I put an SSD in it?

See our page on IDE SSDs for more info.

Mac OS X

XPostFacto can get a Kanga to run OS X, up to at least 10.2.8 "Jaguar", but there's really not much of a point to doing so. You'll face horrid performance, and some features don't work properly. Sleep mode doesn't work, nor does battery monitoring, and PC cards can be hit or miss.
