Macintosh LC 630 | Common Issues |

The Macintosh LC 630 is prone to multiple issues and many 630s will need repairs before they will work properly

Failed/Leaking Capacitors

The Macintosh LC 630 has many SMD Electrolytic Capacitors on its motherboard. These capacitors WILL fail and leak all over the motherboard. When these fail, sound will quit working and then the computer will quit working entirely. For more information, see this link.

Brittle Plastics

The plastics on the LC 630 are rather fragile. Be careful with any plastic clips used to hold it together. You may want to heat clips up with a hair dryer before trying to unclip them to prevent breaks.

Other issues that are common across all computers from this time include failing hard drives, bad floppy drive eject, dead PRAM batteries, and dust/dirt causing issues, especially with the floppy drive.

WARNING: This model of Macintosh uses a 4.5v Block Alkaline battery for PRAM settings backup. These batteries can leak and destroy the logic board of the Macintosh! Remove the original battery, and if you choose to replace it with AAAs or similar, don't leave it installed for longer than a few months, as Alkaline batteries leak far more than Lithiums do. The originals aren't that bad, but you should still remove them. For more information on leaking PRAM batteries, go here.
