This section of MacDat covers all laptop computers sold by Zenith Data Systems (ZDS). ZDS was originally the computer hardware division of the Zenith Radio Company, following their acquisition of Heath Company, who made the Heathkit line of kit computers and other electronic devices. In 1989, ZDS was acquired by Groupe Bull, a French company. In 1996, ZDS underwent a confusing and convoluted 3-way merger with Packard Bell and NEC's computer systems division. The resulting brand (Packard Bell NEC) kept the ZDS brand around until 1999.
Some Zenith laptops were made in-house and others were made through Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs). Most, but not all of the ODM laptops they sold appear to have been custom-made for Zenith and were not sold to other brands.
