Common Faults & Maintenance

Hibernation Battery Leaks

The T4600 and T4600C have an internal NiMH hibernation battery. These batteries are highly prone to leaking, and should be removed on any one of these laptops. It is located above the secondary LCD display, next to the right hinge.

Capacitor Failure

The T4600 machines are full of leaky capacitors, and any of them will need to be recapped in order to function reliably. Most non-recapped ones no longer power on. The DC/DC board, motherboard, and I believe also the LCD on the T4600C are what you'll need to recap. The DC/DC board in particular is the worst offender, given that it uses ELNA LongLife series capacitors, which are just awful, but all three parts are a must-do.

Floppy Drive Failure

None of the unserviced floppy drives for these work anymore because they use a belt that degrades with age. I believe they use a Matsushita/Panasonic drive, and there is not currently a known source for the belt. The drive is very picky about belts and one that sort of fits but not well will not usually work. For this reason, you're better off replacing the original drive with a Teac instead. These have a slightly different pinout, but it's possible to adapt them to work.
