Samsung SENS 810

Samsung SENS 810

The SENS 810 is a Pentium-based laptop that was released in 1996. It's an absolute brick of a laptop and has one quite unique feature - the keyboard slides apart like a desktop ergonomic keyboard. The keyboard also uses cherry mechanical switches! The SENS 810 was sold in two different colors - a light gray and a darker gray-blue (or maybe gray-green?) (both pictured).

Common Faults & Maintenance

CMOS Battery Leaks

The SENS 810 uses a proprietary coin cell Lithium CMOS battery, which normally would be an extremely low leak risk. In this case though, I've seen one SENS 810 on eBay where this battery clearly had gone absolutely thermonuclear, Maxell bomb-style. This makes me suspect that Samsung used a Lithium Thionyl Chloride battery here, which is the same type used in vintage macintosh computers, although they're in the form of a 1/2AA barrel package. The chances of these batteries leaking is not anywhere close to as high as if they had used a NiMH Varta battery, but I'd still recommend removing it if you own one, just because you don't want your SENS 810 to end up like this one.

Due to the fact that when these batteries leak, they usually leak fast and badly, if you don't see any visible rust on the back ports of one of these in an ebay listing, it's probably fine.
