The Nan Tan 3120 is likely the first laptop Nan Tan sold. This model was sold as the UNIQ PhD 286-12, and said UNIQ was reviewed in the March 13th issue of PC Mag in 1990. That is before the 3140 was FCC registered, and the 3140 is their earliest laptop is appear in FCC, so this had to be earlier. It's a 286-based laptop with a Gas Plasma screen and CGA graphics. The case appears to be the same as the much better-documented 8100, but this one is dark gray instead of beige. There is a video on YouTube of one of these laptops starting up, and it identifies in BIOS as a "3120 Laptop Computer", which is consistent with the BIOS model IDs on other Nan Tan laptops from this time. This is likely what Nan Tan called it, but I can't confirm this. Overall, we know plenty about the computer itself, the main mystery here is why it doesn't show up in FCC records.
The answer may lie in another Taiwanese laptop manufacturer - Supertron Electric Co. LTD. Supertron sold a laptop with a nearly identical design to this unit AND they sold a laptop with a nearly identical (but not completely identical) design to the 8100 (the Supercom SL-4140V). I suspect both are the same under the hood. What I'm not sure of is what the connection was between the two companies. Supertron continued to produce laptops for a few more years, so I don't think Nan Tan bought them out. Perhaps they had a business partnership? Not sure.
If you own either the Supertron or Nan Tan versions of this laptop, please reach out!
