Kapok 9200 Series

Kapok 9200 Series

The Kapok 9200 Series (also known as the FMA9200, FMAK9200 or FMAP9200) are 486-based laptops that were released in early 1994. They are highly configurable and overall decent options for 486 DOS gaming, provided you're lucky enough to find one with a TFT screen. While most people call this model a Nan Tan, it was definitely manufactured by Kapok, a sub-division of the Nan Tan company.

Most of the info here came from creepingnet.

As with other Kapok laptops, these laptops were sold by many different companies, and some were sold as generic with no branding. Below is a list of laptops that are rebranded 9200s:

Various Notes

These laptops actually have a boot chime! It can be enabled/disabled via flipping the first DIP switch on the block of 8 next to the CPU.

Common Faults & Maintenance

Hinge Failure

The 9200 plastic isn't as bad as most, but the hinge standoffs can still fail. This can be fixed by reinforcing the standoffs and loosening the hinge, which is as simple as loosening a couple of bolts.

Battery leaks

Being NiMH, the main batteries in the 9200 are prone to leaking. Keep a close watch on them if intact, and remove before storing for long periods of time.
