Common Faults & Maintenance

The ThinkPad 770s are built like tanks and don't typically suffer from hinge failures and those sorts of issues.

Hibernation Battery Leaks

In addition to the Lithium CMOS battery, the 770 Series ThinkPads have a VARTA battery under the keyboard that's used to allow battery sleep-swapping. This battery nearly always leaks with age and MUST be removed from any ThinkPad 770. It is center-left, under the keyboard.

Rubber Coating and Palmrest Paint

The outside of the 770 is coated in soft touch rubber. This coating often goes sticky with age and may need to be stripped off. The palmrest is also painted metal, and the paint is prone to wearing and chipping off.
