The plastic used on the ThinkPad 500 has become very brittle with age, and the plastic around the hinges will crack over time. If you have one of these then you'll need to reinforce the hinge mounts with some sort of epoxy.
The DC/DC board inside the 500 has some through hole electrolytic capacitors that should probably be replaced. I'm not sure if they actually leak commonly, but stuff from this era just can't be trusted anymore. You should also check the display to make sure it doesn't have any leaky caps on it.
The LCD on the 500 can develop Vinegar Syndrome.
