MacDat's Vintage Laptop Buyer's Guide

Main Page

This guide will aim to tell you just about everything you need to know about vintage laptops (in general) in order to find one that fits your needs. I chose to create this guide as I haven't been able to find a similar resource online, at least, not one that's up to date. The closest thing is probably The 8-Bit Guy's video from circa 2016, but it is quite out of date today and leaves out a lot of problems that in his defense, weren't very common at the time that video was made. I will be keeping this guide up to date with new information as time passes.

This guide will give general information on vintage laptops as a whole, the unique characteristics of laptops of each processor "generation", information on the most common faults that affect vintage laptops, and a guide to checking an eBay or other for-sale listing for any red flags before purchasing.

For the purposes of this guide, I will be defining a "vintage laptop" as any laptop released around 2005 or earlier. I am fully aware that many will choose to draw the line on "vintage" to much earlier or even later, but that's not the main point here.
