Due to poor design (and probably brittle plastics), cracks near the display hinges are a common problem.
The 512MB RAM limit in this laptop is apparantly artificial, and I've heard that there was at one point a modified BIOS that removed it, allowing for the full 2GB that this laptop should be able to support in theory. So far, it appears this patch has been lost to time.
